Curious about maté? Come and find out what all the fuss is about.

Maté is much more than a drink. In Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and parts of Brazil, it's a daily ritual, a social occasion and, for many people, something they wouldn't leave home without.

Now that maté is finding new fans around the world, we're bringing a little of this South American tradition to Hackney.

Our informal workshops introduce you to the history, culture and rituals surrounding yerba maté. You'll discover how maté is traditionally prepared, how the maté and bombilla (the traditional cup and metal straw) are used, and why sharing maté is such an important part of South American life.

Workshops are available in English or Spanish, making them suitable for curious newcomers and Spanish speakers or learners who want to explore South American culture while practising the language.
